What inspired you to become a Makeup Artist?

My interest in makeup started when I was a child and at every opportunity I began eagerly experimenting with my mother’s makeup. I was so excited by makeup and l have always loved the pretty colours and textures of makeup products.

As a child of the 80’s, I was fascinated by ‘Video Hits’ on TV and all the star’s awesome makeup. What amazed me was how great makeup can make you look and feel and I could see how great I could make others feel by doing their makeup!

I started my first makeup lessons at age 14, in a class full of adults and was hooked instantly. I was very determined and quite audacious, I started experimenting and building clients. I started an apprenticeship in a salon and worked in the beauty industry in Sydney, then I moved to the Gold Coast and was drawn to the energy and excitement of hairdressing and makeup. I eventually opened my own hair and makeup salon in 2002.

I experimented with minerals and natural oxides and created some of my own makeup products in 2004 when Kylie’s Professional was officially launched. I am proud to employ new and experienced freelance makeup artists and hairstylists to work with me on weddings, events and corporate work. I am thrilled to give fellow artists monitorship and work opportunities to help them refine their skills.

What do you love most about being a Makeup Artist?

I love working with interesting people, transforming faces and making people smile. I am constantly intrigued by the sheer art of makeup - the way a makeup technique or product can completely transform a face, style or mood.

I imagine that creating a professional, high performance and long-wear product range comes with its own set of challenges - why was it important that your product range be vegan, ethical, cruelty-free, natural and organic?

My own sensitive skin required me to be mindful of ingredients and the skin issues my clients often encountered prompted me to find safe alternatives. A few of my close friends who worked in the beauty industry became unwell from regular exposure to toxic products and this inspired me to create a product range that ticks all boxes being safe, professional and high quality.

Consumers are becoming more aware of the ingredients in their products and are looking for healthier alternatives that perform whilst nurturing their skin and are gentle on our planet. I am so passionate about the wellbeing of animals, the range is completely vegan and cruelty-free.

Which product in your range was the most difficult to develop and formulate and why?

Working with only safe and natural ingredients can pose many challenges as the properties can be very different to synthetic or animal derived products. Achieving the perfect consistency, blends and shades for my loose pigment foundations was extremely difficult as I required the impossible. The foundation needed to perform across a wide range of styles, conditions and situations. From natural and every-day makeup looks to bold and glamorous looks as well. It needed to be suitable and perform exceptionally for all ages, skin types and tones. Working as a professional artist it was essential that the products performed for events like weddings, photoshoots, video shoots and for television.

When working on shoots, which four products from your range do you reach for most?

1. My foundation Primer for the perfect prep and mixing medium. A great base is essential to successfully complete any job with confidence. I also mix my Primer with my pigments to create creams, of which I can create an infinite range of custom colours for use on the face or body.

2. My Mineral Goddess Loose Foundation, really is the foundation of all my work. My range will cover every skin type and tone, in every situation and it just lasts and lasts.

3. My loose pigment eyeshadows would be next as I can use these versatile shadows on eyes, brows, for contouring and highlighting, blush, even on the lips.

4. Finally, I could not live without Mascara as it finishes off a makeup look so beautifully. My Mascara also malti-tasks as a highly pigmented eyeliner.

5. Ok, I know you said four products, however for photography and video I would not dream of leaving out a setting powder for flash and harsh studio lighting. I created my Xtra matt Setting powders for the perfect finish. Absolutely crucial to eliminating shine.

Kylie, you have achieved so much professionally and personally in such a short period of time and when we last spoke you mentioned that you became a grandma at 38! How do you fit everything in, stay so focussed on your business and so generously share your knowledge, skills and passion of makeup to your community?

My work has been a huge part of my life as it has been a lifelong passion of mine. The growth has occurred as a natural progression from all the energy and love that has been put into it.

Fortunately my family have been a huge part of the business. My husband has been such a wonderful support from the very beginning, helping me with all aspects from office work, support, photography, display, growing clients and even as a reluctant makeup guinea pig.

My daughter is a fabulous makeup artist who has worked alongside me for years, she loves to organise the office, warehouse and me. She is absolutely beautiful and has featured as a model in my brand and campaign shoots. She recently had a baby daughter, a new little Goddess who continues to inspire me in so many ways.

My son has also contributed to the business over the years with events, shoots and managing inventory. His son has also earned some handy pocket money, ‘helping Nanny’.

I am of course ecstatic, as it’s been fantastic to have the whole family involved and working toward the same goal. Working with family has been wonderful as we can bounce ideas off each other and be brutally honest with our opinions. Care must be taken to ensure that the work/play balance is in check and I am often reminded not to turn the dinner table into a boardroom meeting.

Hard work is crucial, however focus, time management and rest are essential to ensure there is balance.
